Gracie Watson, and why she is behind a fence
Gracie was six when she died of pneumonia in 1889, the only daughter of the manager of the Pulaski House hotel. The German-born sculptor John Walz carved her from white Italian marble, working from a photograph, and the result is the most photographed single memorial in the cemetery by a wide margin. She is now enclosed - the volume of visitors, and the coins and toys people leave, made it necessary. You can see her clearly; you cannot reach her, and that is deliberate.
Two benches worth finding
Conrad Aiken, who won the Pulitzer for poetry, is buried under a bench-shaped monument inscribed simply “Give my love to the world” - it is meant to be sat on, which is the point of it. Johnny Mercer, who wrote Moon River among some fifteen hundred other songs, has a bench too, carrying a line drawing reproduced from a self-portrait. Both are easy to walk past and neither is signposted from the road.
The one that is not here
The Bird Girl on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was removed from Bonaventure in 1997 because the attention was damaging the plot she stood on, and she has been on loan to Telfair Museums ever since - currently at the Telfair Academy, as the centrepiece of her own exhibition. Visitors still arrive looking for her, and this is the single most common disappointment at the site. If she is why you were coming, go to the museum instead; the cemetery is worth a visit for entirely different reasons.
Can you find them without a guide?
Gracie, yes - she is the one plot most visitors do locate, because everybody asks and the route is well worn. The two benches are harder, and the rest of what is worth seeing here is essentially invisible unless somebody tells you it is there. The free Bonaventure Historical Society app helps and does not replace a person. That is the honest case for a tour, and it is a weaker one than the operators would like: you are buying navigation and stories, not access.
