Free, open, and four miles out
It is free, it is open every day, and you can drive straight in. Here is what a paid tour buys that the open gate does not.

Four of the search phrases that reach this page are the same question in different words. The answer is not the one the tour operators would pick.
Bonaventure has been owned by the City of Savannah since 1907 and is open to the public from 08:00 to 17:00 every day of the year, free of charge. You can drive in - there are small parking areas at each gate and pull-offs along the wider roads. The Bonaventure Historical Society publishes a free self-guided app for iOS and Android, and runs free guided tours on the second weekend of every month. Anyone telling you a ticket is required is selling you something. This is the exact opposite of St Louis No. 1 in New Orleans, where a 2015 Archdiocese rule genuinely does make a licensed guide the only way through the gate - and knowing which kind of place you are visiting is worth more than any tour recommendation.
Two things, and neither is entry. The first is transport: Bonaventure sits about four miles east of the historic district, there is no useful public route to it, and a return rideshare will eat much of the difference between the free option and the paid one. The second is navigation. The cemetery covers roughly 100 acres of live oak and Spanish moss, the plots that people come to see are not signposted, and a first-time visitor with a phone app spends a good part of their visit working out where they are. A guide removes both problems. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether you have a car and how much you mind wandering.
Bonaventure's fame outside Georgia is almost entirely down to one book and the film made from it, and the statue on that famous cover is no longer in the cemetery - it was moved years ago because the attention was damaging the plot around it. Visitors who arrive expecting to find it are routinely disappointed, and it is the single most common misunderstanding about the place. What is actually here is a nineteenth-century garden cemetery of unusual beauty, which is a better reason to come than the one most people arrive with.

it was nice get the tour on the golf cart especially with the heat. the guide was very knowledgeable and let us stop and ask questions and take pictures. it was also nice being on the golf cart when it started raining. I feel like we saw the entire cemetery not just parts of it and understand what we saw. thank you for a great tour.
